Since June 2017 Over the Sun founder Kai Staats and a growing team of researchers, code developers, and dreamers has been engaged by Arizona State University’s Interplanetary Initiative to develop SIMOC, a scalable, interactive model of an off-world community.

We envision a near future in which humans are exploring, working, and living on the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Our contribution is a high-fidelity, agent-based model in which researchers and citizen scientists can explore the the careful balance of mechanical life support systems and plant-based bioregeneration for long-term, off-world habitation.

Having received three rounds of funding, the SIMOC is nearly two years in design and development, with two months remaining in the Phase III development cycle. Partners include National Geographic Society, the Biosphere 2, and the Arizona Science Center.
